In a world of plenty, hunger should be a thing of the past. Unfortunately, this is not the reality. For example, India ranks 94th out of 107 countries on the 2019 Global Hunger Index. Under nutrition in India is the product of the usual suspects: widespread poverty, endemic hunger, rapid population growth, pockets of weak governance, poor health systems and unreliable national indicators, all of which are compounded by issues of caste, ethnicity, religion and gender.
Muslims represent India’s largest religious minority group at nearly 13% of the country’s population. This growing minority of Muslim Indians are more economically disadvantaged and dissatisfied. Muslims in India are more likely than any other minority to live below the poverty line.
